So every morning as I scale the mountain on 8th east to work I pass a lot of people. Since summer has come the faces I pass have changed and there have been a lot of the “summer citizens” out walking in the morning. Also there is a man who is blind and uses a seeing stick, which I pass almost every morning.
Most mornings I try to brighten the other walkers’ day by a simple “hello” or “good morning” but when I pass this gentleman on the sidewalk, I for some reason do not know what to do. I have these two opposite feelings in me as what to do when I pass him. I want to jump out of his way, and at the same time, I want to grab his arm and help him down the uneven sidewalk.
This morning as we were coming closer to each other I had realized that every time I had passed this gentleman I had never said anything to him. Why had I not, he is blind not deaf. As I neared him I said a simple “Good morning” as I said this I saw a big smile spread across his face with his reply of “Good morning to you too.” As I kept walking I realized this is the thing I was supposed to do. I didn’t need to jump out of his way so he didn’t stumble into me. Or help him down the sidewalk. I just needed to say Hello to him, letting him know where I was on the sidewalk and treat him like I treated everyone else in the morning. I am ashamed it took me this long to figure out.
