Country Life

So growing up I have never considered myself a country girl since my dad isn’t a farmer, we don’t have large numbers of livestock, and I never did FFA or 4H. But since moving to Logan I might have to say I am a bit of a country girl.

Last night I went on a date with Jason, his friend Brandon, and Brandon’s date Bessie. Both of the boys are from Brigham City and as the date went on I got to see how much of city boys they are. Bessie lives on a dairy in Lewiston, so of course she lives in the country. Brandon called to get directions and as I could hear one side of the conversation I had to laugh. “Ok so I go over a hill, then I pass a little white house….then a tractor mailbox...These are terrible directions just tell me street names. Well your address something!” When Brandon got off the phone he said how bad her directions were and all I could say is “That’s how I give directions.”

As we kept driving we passed a few fields and Brandon would ask me what crop was growing. Then he asked “What area do they grow pickles?” No one said anything. “Like Idaho grows potatoes, where do they grow pickles?” I didn’t know if he was being funny or not and so I said “Are you being serious?” He replied with a “Yeah, I have always wondered that.” Jason and I laughed and told him that they make pickles out of cucumbers. Brandon seriously didn’t know that.

We got to Bessies’ house after a few more laughs. Such as Brandon didn’t know if you could pass a car on a country road since there were no lines on the road, and thought you had to drive 25 mph since it was a “residential area.”

After we picked up Bessie we went back to Maverick to get some snacks to take fishing. While we were there a older man asked Bessie if we were going on a date over to the cow sale for Richmonds Black and White Days. Both Bessie and I convinced the boys that we should go to the sale. Once to the sale Brandon and Jason didn’t want to go so me and Bessie jumped out and ran in. The boys told us we could only be there for 10 minutes, but no guys can tell Bessie and I how long we could stay somewhere, and after 15 minutes we found the boys walking in, looking lost. Neither one had ever been to a cow sale and I think they both found it quite exciting. We ended up having to teach Brandon how they milk cows now a days, he thought they still did it by hand.

I only thought there were people who didn’t know about country life in the big cities. It was pretty sad to find some from Brigham City, let alone the valedictorian of his class, and have him not even know where pickles come from.

I'm glad that even though I married a guy who can stand his own in a big ol' city, he still gets how things happen in the "country."

...Most of the time!

I hope you mocked him about pickles the entire night.

Good job introducing them to a cow sale--hope you had your boots on!
